The newer BS 6 phase 2 vehicles are E20 capable. Ethanol burns cleaner but it doesn’t have energy value as petrol. And ethanol , petrol densities are different so if the blend is bad. It’s going to be bad for engine. Ethanol is also a water magnet, which is bad for engines.(So highly do not recommend to store fuel in tank, just fill when necessary). If still not feeling good, try Nayara, Shell or Jio fuel, they have comparatively lower ethanol blends. Nayara is my go to. I get good mileage + very good customer support (They have their own private refinery)

Most new vehicles are compliant of E20 petrol. The issue with the older cars where the engine might struggle to cause combustion of E20 petrol, leading to stress and low mileage. 

There's multiple issues with this from a consumer standpoint. 

* They cannot purchase older/second hand cars - considering that newer cars are no longer affordable.
* They cannot purchase diesel cars, because they are banned in Delhi. Who knows when they will implement it across all cities? Is it worth getting a car, which turns out to be a bad investment? 
   * Shift towards electric vehicles sounds all good, but unfortunately, the infrastructure is not developing in the same rate where cars are being sold.

Yes, Carbureted two-wheelers are mostly affected. At a local mechanic’s shop, I’ve often seen a line of Activas 5G and other honda's carbureted bikes with starting issues and fuel leakage. The only temporary solution is to use XP95 petrol.

E20 compliant engines will be fine with E20 fuel. However, E20 wont be kind to older vehicles. However, AFAIK, E20 is still optional as of now and we get regular petrol in most places. I am hoping by the time E20 becomes mandatory, EV cars would be common place which will offer higher range than the affordable EVs of today.

Ethanol damages organic non-additive rubber hoses and O rings. Not an issue now because the technology that allows E85 fuels has long existed. In fact, ethanol-blended fuels burn cleaner and produce less wasted heat.

Blending ethanol will reduce the cost of petrol but they won't immediately reduce the price but will absorb whatever price increase occurs in the future. This way less fluctuations resulting in lesser manipulation and hoarding issues

My BS4 scooty is giving 25-28kmpl mileage. Earlier it used to put out 35-40kmpl. I recently spent 20k for new engine parts i.e piston rings, camshaft, timing chain etc. Still the mileage is very low. Definitely fuel is the problem.

My understanding is ethanol is hard on certain types of rubber which were commonly used in older vehicles. It shouldn't harm modern vehicles.


It can absorb water out of the air, which can result in difficulty
starting a vehicle that has sat for months since the ethanol / water mix will sink to the bottom. And it is a lower energy density.


It burns cleaner, has a higher octane rating (allowing for higher compression ratios / efficiency engines), and should in general be cheaper / lower carbon intensity than gasoline for a given amount of energy.

I don't know of the effect of burning alcohol in an IC engine or the effects of mixing petrol with alcohol . But the main issue is CO2 emissions. Doesn't distillation generate C02 ,by my calculations , 10% of the available energy generated during the combustion of ethanol will be used to distill it and that too in ideal conditions . India is groveling at the feet of the global organisations .BS6 engines are a complete engineering failure (at least planned obsolescence ) , EVs are foolish  .

In my experience, if I don't start my honda dio for two week,, it won't start and if it does, the petrol keeps leaking from the carb. Took it to a mechanic and he showed me the carb with a white color deposit. He told me it's a common thing among old scooter and asked me to use unleaded petrol. It doesn't happen with unleaded so must be something got to do with the blend.

For those who don't know, all kinds of petrol are now mixed with 20% ethanol. No exceptions. Even xp95,xp100 for that matter. BPCL, IOCL outlet managers too confirmed it. Till last year it was 12%. From this Jan it is 20%. By 2035, govt wants 30% ethanol which is bull sh*t move. Vehicles do provide less power. Just for the benefit of some politicos family, we are paying a price.

Pros: provides power and cools the engine at the same time. Fuel economy isn't necessarily enhanced by much but isn't reduced either. Benefits outweigh when used for long rides. 

Price should be reduced or at least stay the same but we all know what's most likely. 

Cons: it has water content. Doesn't mix well with petrol completely. If the vehicle stays idle for long, it separates and water can cause problems to the engine if this scenario repeats. 

Basically having anything above e20 is like cheap nitro without using extra kits to cool engine. Gives a lil power boost. Poor man's power boost to say.

If the vehicle is certified as E20, it does not harm the engine or components related to fuel system. yes mileage (fuel efficiency) is dropped slightly (3-5%). Larger benefit is to environment with reduced emissions.

In my opinion, the damage to the engine citing ethanol is overblown. 

If you can ignore all these people who are worried about the government shoving a tube into their throat and feeding almond milk and the government forcing them to eat panner tikka masala made with tofu, we can look at this more critically. 

There are three components to ethanol blending affecting older motorcycles and they have to be looked at separately.

One is ethanol affecting the fuel lines and rubbers. The fact is ethanol blending has been done for long and BS3 came into effect in 2005 with at least 5 percent ethanol blending recommendation. So, manufacturers must have been notified and most of the fuel lines and rubbers used are probably alcohol resistant since the early 2000s. Even if they are not for some very old bikes, they can be fitted with modern materials since these are standard items. 

Second is water accumulation in fuel if you leave it out for long. But this is a problem even with modern bikes, and petrol goes bad on its own if it's left for long. This is just an issue that can be avoided with good practices like cleaning out the fuel before letting the bike stay unused for long and all that.

Third is the RON number. This is the actual problem that might cause the issue with modern fuel on older bikes. I don't know what solution is available so far, but the government should bring some kind of cheap additive, like how people used to add oil to the fuel when they used to pump the two strokes. Essentially if the octane number is brought down there ideally should be not much of a problem with the fuel damaging the engine in any significant way.

Vehicles since BS6 are E20 compatible and so you can assume that the manufacturers started making changes at least a few years before it started. Any vehicle with an injector instead of a carburettor will be fine.

Simple, you need to scrap old vehicles and buy new vehicles regularly. 

You people hanging on to old vehicles are the reason the manufacturers are lobbying for a shorter vehicle lifespan. The govt agrees, it's a win win fot them. Buy a new vehicle, pay tax, buy petrol pay tax. Now they save money by saying we are indegonizing the fuel creation. All this tax is levied on the name of luxury. The fuel causing harm to only old engines is cherry on top of the cake for them. 

So, rev that engine to it'max potential to enjoy it while it lasts, coz the way vehicles are made now they won't last for long.

Why would there be moisture in the fuel tank to begin with ? It's the people who should make sure there's no water contamination so that ethanol doesn't stick to it. Brazil has E85 , and they don't have a problem with it. Don't get me wrong but carrying petrol in water bottles is a bad practice to begin with.

Look I'm not denying the whole thing is fishy cos of who owns what and I'm definitely not in support of this. The only logical reason I can see as to why this has been pushed and implemented is because India wants to reduce foreign dependency and oil is something that we import a lot of. Ethanol can be produced locally and so benefits our economy when we buy it. When we buy oil the money goes to Russia. Even a 20% reduction as is the case with E20 is massive. 


Having said all that, I think it's criminal that the government isn't giving an option to people with older vehicles, how is that environmentally friendly? It burns way more resources to get a new vehicle than it does to use an existing one. This is a double win for them because they get the extra tax from the adulterated petrol as well as tax on the inevitable new vehicles. And our people are so fkn dumb they aren't raging about this.

My car and bike are ec20 now they are gonna put 27%. Now mileage and engine will suffer.

You keep mentioning 10-20 percent mileage reduction and because of ethanol blending but tbh that seems very far fetched. I'd expect maybe 5-7 percent (as also quoted by most sources) and not more than that amount. You mentioned that you are riding an aging bike. If I were you, I'd also bake that into the equation before coming to the conclusion that it's all due to ethanol blended fuels.
